Aqueous Film-Forming Foam (AFFF) is a highly effective, water-based synthetic firefighting suppressant designed to rapidly extinguish high-intensity fires fueled by flammable liquids. Originally developed in the 1960s by the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory and the 3M Company, it became the mandatory gold standard for combatting volatile hydrocarbon and jet fuel fires across military bases, commercial airports, and industrial refineries. However, because traditional AFFF relies on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) for its physical properties, its use has triggered severe environmental, regulatory, and human health crises.
